Objective

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

Ever since I was a little boy, all I wanted to do was help change the world - whether that be on a local, regional, national, or even international level. As I saw the environment around me evolve, I noticed more and more that people have not taken time out for the little things. At risk of sounding cliché, no one stops to smell the roses anymore, and most of us miss out on our lives because of it. I saw this problem all around me - for example, how tirelessly my father worked at his job, to the point where my own relationship with him was torn asunder until recently. Grateful as I may be to him, I yearned to help and right those issues within others’ lives - to try and see the beauty in the work, as well as help them see the beauty outside of it. Without the support I had around me, helping transform and guide me into the future, I would not be able to stand on my own two feet today. I am still dedicated to the same principle that I held in my heart all those years ago - I want to make a life. Not just make a living.

Experience

INTERN, STEP2 LEGAL DEPARTMENT

2020

I worked with Step2’s general legal counsel, learning the ins and outs of how to read and write legal documents, how to effectively summarize and communicate their contents, and what law looks like in the business world. My experience with both the in-house lawyers there, and the legal side of a large, consumer-facing business like Step2, helped me realize and shape my desire to become a lawyer, and showed me what it takes to be successful in the legal world - hard work, determination, and a drive for improvement. While I was there, I handled some of the international contracts as well, learning how the rules and regulations on international trade affect individual corporations.

Cancer research, western reserve academy

2016-2018

For two years, I researched the tp53 gene in order to try and reverse a series of mutations within that specific genome. We had to first successfully isolate and count the entirety of the actual genetic sequence, as it had not yet been fully catalogued within a database. Afterwards, through a series of enzymes and repeated stress-tests on the protein themselves, we were able to successfully cause multiple mutations within the sequence of DNA itself. Unfortunately, I then promptly graduated from Western Reserve Academy.

Retail Assistant, The Learned OWl Bookshop

2016-2018

I spent the majority of my time at The Learned Owl Bookshop chatting with customers, cleaning and organising the bookstore itself, and of course getting lost in timeless classics such as The Iliad, Crime and Punishment, and discovering a new love of my literary life: Kurt Vonnegut. My exposure to the vast amounts of knowledge available in the small bookstore I worked in helped kickstart my passion for philosophy, and directly lead to me enrolling in a philosophy class in my senior year of high school. The easy access to authors such as Dostoyevsky, the need to rapidly memorise and summarise information quickly and succinctly for customers, and the ability to spread knowledge made working there important for both my academic and personal growth as I got older.
